What Parasites Can Affect Your Pet?

Parasites are a year-round problem for pets in Australia, not just in the warmer months. Keeping your pet protected against the most common types helps prevent serious illness and discomfort.

Fleas are among the most common parasites of dogs and cats. Their bites cause intense itching and can lead to flea allergy dermatitis, a skin condition that makes your pet miserable. A single flea can quickly become a full infestation in your home.

Ticks are a serious concern, especially the paralysis tick. Found in bushy and coastal areas, paralysis ticks inject a toxin that can cause difficulty breathing, weakness, and can be fatal without treatment.

Intestinal worms (including roundworms, hookworms, tapeworms, and whipworms) can cause weight loss, diarrhoea, vomiting, and a poor coat condition. Some intestinal worms can also be passed to humans, particularly children.

Heartworm is transmitted by mosquitoes and is one of the most dangerous parasites. The worms live in the heart and major blood vessels, causing serious heart and lung disease. Treatment for an established heartworm infection is complex and risky, so prevention is essential.

We stock a range of preventative products, including monthly chewables, spot-on treatments, and long-lasting injections. Our team can recommend the right combination for your pet based on their species, age, weight, and lifestyle. Consistent, year-round protection is always the safest approach.

Common Questions About Parasite Prevention

  • Does my pet need parasite prevention all year round?

Yes. While parasites are more active in warmer months, fleas and worms can be a problem at any time of year in Australia. Heartworm is transmitted by mosquitoes, which are present in most areas year-round. Consistent protection is safer than starting and stopping with the seasons.

  • What is the best flea and tick treatment for my dog or cat?

It depends on your pet's species, age, weight, and lifestyle. We carry a range of vet-grade products that are more effective than supermarket alternatives. Our team can help you choose the right option at your next visit.

  • Can I use the same parasite product for my dog and cat?

No. Some products designed for dogs are toxic to cats. Always use a product specifically labelled for your pet's species, and talk to our team if you're unsure.

  • How do I know if my pet has worms?

Common signs include weight loss, a dull coat, scooting, visible worms in droppings, diarrhoea, and a pot-bellied appearance (especially in puppies and kittens). However, some worm infestations show no obvious symptoms, which is why regular preventative treatment is important.

  • Are paralysis ticks a risk in the Sutherland Shire?

Paralysis ticks are found in bushy and coastal areas along the east coast of Australia. If your pet spends time outdoors in these environments, tick prevention is essential. We recommend checking your pet's skin regularly, especially around the head, neck, ears, and between the toes.

  • Does my indoor cat need parasite prevention?

Yes. Fleas can be carried indoors on clothing and shoes, and mosquitoes (which transmit heartworm) can easily get inside. Indoor cats are at lower risk but not no risk, so a basic prevention plan is still recommended.

Customer Feedback

“When we got our new puppy Parker Brown, we knew we would go back to Sutherland Vet. They were the medical team that got us through the routine and unexpected ups and downs of our old dog Leroy’s life, right up to the end and they did it with so much love and care. There is so much trust and history there. They’re part of the family.”
