Cryotherapy

Treatment for skin cancers

Like people that receive ‘freezing’ treatment for skin cancers, here at Sutherland Vet Clinic we also perform cryotherapy using liquid nitrogen.

We find this therapy works well if treated early on fair-skinned dogs that have problems with skin cancers developing hairless areas or on the ears and noses of white cats.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How does cryotherapy work?

Cryotherapy uses liquid nitrogen to freeze and destroy abnormal skin cells. Your vet applies the treatment directly to the affected area whilst your pet is under general anesthetic. In many cases, a single session is all that's needed.

  • What conditions can cryotherapy treat?

Cryotherapy works well for small, surface-level skin issues such as skin cancers, warts, papillomas, skin tags, and benign growths. It's especially useful for lesions in tricky spots like the eyelids, ears, lips, and nose, where surgery would be more complicated. It's not typically suited to large or deep tumours.

  • Does my pet need anaesthesia for cryotherapy?

Even though the freezing process naturally numbs the area, there is still some discomfort so most pets will require heavy sedation or light anaesthesia. This makes cryotherapy a popular option for older animals or pets where surgery carries a higher risk.

  • What happens after treatment?

Recovery from cryotherapy is straightforward compared to surgery. There are no stitches or wounds to manage. The treated area may scab over or change colour as it heals, which is completely normal. Some cases may require a follow-up session, but many issues are resolved after a single treatment.

Customer Feedback

“When we got our new puppy Parker Brown, we knew we would go back to Sutherland Vet. They were the medical team that got us through the routine and unexpected ups and downs of our old dog Leroy’s life, right up to the end and they did it with so much love and care. There is so much trust and history there. They’re part of the family.”
